Periodontal Therapy:
(Gum Treatment)
Periodontal
Therapy: Periodontal disease is an infection of the gingiva. This infection causes bone loss around teeth
causing them to be loose and eventually, if untreated, lost.
Diagnosis is performed by measuring pocket depth which is
recorded. Therapy to combat this disease involves removal of
the irritant (i.e. bacteria/biofilm) that causes the
infection. Removal of the bacteria is performed using
ultrasonic instrumentation and hand scalers by the
hygienist. Recall after this procedure is of the utmost
importance. Recall generally occurs every 3 months to
fight reoccurrence of buildup. At these appointments the
hygienist checks "pockets" and gives instruction to patients
as well.
